Clinically Isolated Demyelinating Syndromes

Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) describes a single attack of symptoms that are like those of multiple sclerosis. An MRI scan of a patient who experienced CIS can help determine whether they are at low or high risk of developing multiple sclerosis.

For patients whose MRI scans at the time of CIS show abnormalities typical of MS, over 80 percent may develop multiple sclerosis within 10 years, which is the time of highest risk of someone with CIS developing multiple sclerosis. In some cases, the MRI or other diagnostic tests may suggest causes other than MS for the patient’s symptoms.
